September 2004: 17th Street Causeway Bridge                Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Also named the E. Clay Shaw, Jr. Bridge after a Florida congressman, this movable (bascule) bridge was dedicated in April 2002, and crosses the Stranahan River in Fort Lauderdale.  The permanent bridge cost $62,000,000.  It has "Carina Piers," which resemble a boat's keel.  In addition to their aesthetic appeal, carina piers reduce the counterweight and facilitate the use of less equipment to raise and lower the deck.  The prestressed concrete approaches used cantilever construction methods.  With its closed vertical clearance at 55 feet (replacing the prior bridge's 22 feet) the numbers of openings and traffic delay have been reduced.  Because the bridge is in essence two parallel structures, there are four bascule leaves.  The tender house has a very modernistic style.
