The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is principally a suspension bridge
connecting San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island, and principally a
cantilever span, with truss spans connecting that island to
Oakland. Designed by engineer Ralph Modjeski, it was built between
1933 and 1936. The eastern cantilever and truss span is currently in
process of replacement by an elevated, self-anchored suspension
span. For more information on this, see Bay
Bridge Info. The western suspension span is 9260 feet long and
220 feet above water level.
