This suspension bridge in Singapore is among the oldest surviving bridges
in the country, and was built in 1869 (though some sources state 1868).
It was named for the last governor of the Straits Settlement, General
William Orfeur Cavenagh, before Singapore became part of a crown colony. The bridge was built in Glasgow,
Scotland, and originally carried oxcarts and rickshaws across the
Singapore River. Singapore
Infopedia reports that it is the oldest bridge across the river, and
identifies more of the bridge's colorful history.
