2004: Tower Bridge
London, England |
|

|
Tower Bridge, across the
Thames River in London, was completed in 1894. The framework for the
towers is steel, encased in Cornish granite and Portland stone. It
is a double "bascule" bridge, with the roadway leaves raising to
allow marine traffic to pass. At top are the walkways, composed of
girders, and are actually cantilever construction. There is also a
suspension component, maintaining the side spans. |
