This
cantilever bridge was designed by engineer Gustav Lindenthal (1850-1935)
and was built between 1901 and 1909. It is also known affectionately
as the 59th Street Bridge. New York City Department of
Transportation reports its length, including approaches, at 7449
feet. Henry Petroskim in Engineers of Dreams notes that a
suspension bridge was proposed for the site as early as 1838. It was
originally known as Blackwell’s Island Bridge.
