March 2007: Brickell Avenue Bridge                    Miami, Florida

The Brickell Avenue Bridge across the Miami River in Miami, Florida is a movable bridge of the double bascule type, i.e., the prototypical "drawbridge." Marine traffic passes underneath or, more technically, through as the roads are raised in an inverted "vee." It is a 424 foot bridge built in 1995 that features the bronze statue titled “Tequesta Family” by Manuel Carbonell, a detail of which is at bottom left.  There are also six bronze bas-reliefs honoring significant people in Miami's history--Bronze reliefs on the bridge honor six people prominent in the history of Miami—Julia Tuttle, Henry M. Flagler, William and Mary Brickell, D.A. Dorsey and Marjory Stoneman Douglas--the latter of which is depicted at bottom right and which appears on one of the towers.
