The
original timber bridge on near this site, a 26-arch bridge, was built in
1729 and replaced a ferry service. This five-arch bridge. connecting
Fulham to Putney, replaced that one when completed in 1886, upstream from
the original. It is 700 feet long, 43 feet wide, and made from
concrete and granite. It was designed by Sir
Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891). Bazalgette played a major role in
sanitary sewer reform in London. The site marks the start of the
annual Oxford-Cambridge boat race.
