March 2005:  Washington Road Bridge             Princeton, New Jersey

These five views of the Washington Road Bridge in Princeton, New Jersey, show the elegance of contemporary stone arch bridge construction.  The bridge, as Carnegie Lake which it spans, was a gift from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.  The lake was artificially made for the benefit of the Princeton Crew Team in the early years of the twentieth century.  The bridge was built in 1905.  It is a four span, stone-faced "concrete-steel" deck arch bridge according to the NJ Historic Bridge Survey.  It is 454 feet long with an elliptical shape.  Note the close-ups indicating the coursed rubble composition and the voussoirs on the rim of each arch span.
