in The Bridges of New Jersey, this six-span Pratt truss bridge is
1,45.5 feet long and was built in 1904. It is the third bridge in
this location over the Delaware River. The original bridge on the
site was built in 1814, with six arch spans and was designed for rail as
well as wagon traffic. It was lost in the flood of 1841, replaced by
a second bridge itself destroyed by flood in 1903. The roadway (a
portion of the grill shown below) is twenty-five feet above normal low
water, according to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission
booklet on its non-toll bridges. Also featured below is the bridge
officer's shelter on the New Jersey side, built 1954. A detail of
one of the lamps on the bridge is also shown.
