Jersey City is New Jersey's second largest city.  Originally settled by Europeans as "Pavonia" in 1630 (named for Michael Pauw), by 1820 other neighboring areas had been settled, and the area was incorporated as Jersey City, though legally still part of Bergen Township until its independence in 1838.  Various other separations and consolidations occurred until the present borders were established in 1873.  From 1917 through 1943, Frank "I am the Law" Hague reigned as mayor.  While having lost much of its industry, Jersey City has reinvented itself in the service sector, and its skyline reflects the new office buildings across the river from Manhattan.

Featured to the left is the famous Colgate Clock, made in 1924.  It was designed by a Colgate engineer and built by the Seth Thomas Company.  For images of the city, click on Jersey City 1, Jersey City 2.
