Jersey
City is New Jersey's second largest city. Originally settled by
Europeans as "Pavonia" in 1630 (named for Michael Pauw), by 1820
other neighboring areas had been settled, and the area was incorporated as
Jersey City, though legally still part of Bergen Township until its
independence in 1838. Various other separations and consolidations
occurred until the present borders were established in 1873. From
1917 through 1943, Frank "I am the Law" Hague reigned as
mayor. While having lost much of its industry, Jersey City has
reinvented itself in the service sector, and its skyline reflects the new
office buildings across the river from Manhattan.
