2005: "Magere Brug"
Amsterdam, The Netherlands |
|
This bridge, also known as the "Skinny Bridge,"
crosses the Amstel River in Amsterdam. It is a double leaf
drawbridge, also known as a bascule bridge. The Amsterdam
Heritage website for this bridge, http://www.bmz.amsterdam.nl/adam/uk/brug3.html,
indicates it was built in 1840 and restored 1934. Other websites
offer somewhat different information; for example, the Frommers site, www.frommers.com,
claims this is an 18th century replacement for a 17th century
bridge. Regardless, it remains one of the most well-known and
picturesque of Amsterdam's many bridges (put at over 1280 by one
source). It has nine spans, which can be seen in the picture
immediately below. |
