The PSFS Building
(Philadelphia Savings Fund Society) in Philadelphia was built in 1932, and
designed by Philadelphian George Howe and William Lescaze of Switzlerland.
The Whitney Guide to 20th Century American Architecture states that this
building when constructed "was the most innovative skyscraper in the
world," due to its "T-shaped tower set on a podium-style
base." |
The Lever House at 390
Park Avenue, New York City, constructed in 1952, is seen here from
slightly different angles, with each side reflecting different buildings
in its shimmering surface. The innovation here was the separation of
the 24-story vertical part of the building from the one-story podium,
raised off the ground. Gordon Bunshaft was the principal architect,
of Skidmore Owings & Merrill. |
