The Great Swamp traces its birth to the Wisconsin Glacier's appearance in this southernmost area some 25,000 years ago   As it melted and returned northward, the water from the melted ice filled the basin formed and dammed up by the deposited sand and gravel.  As the vast lake drained, swampland and marshland resulted.  The National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey consists of a Management Area, in which boardwalks and set trailways keep people from disturbing the natural area.  Blinds exist for viewing wildlife.  To the east are the Wilderness Area, with hiking trails, and the Morris County park system contains its own set of trails and facilities.  To the west is the Lord Stirling area, part of the Somerset County park system.  Around and about are preservation areas.
