February  2006: Verrazano Narrows Bridge           New York, New York

Commenced in 1959 and completed in 1964 and designed by Othmar Ammann, this suspension bridge--one of the longest in the world--was named for Giovanni da Verrazano, the European explorer who entered New York Harbor in 1524.  The towers (one of which is emphasized here) are 693 feet high.  The main span is 4,620 feet in length.  The Brooklyn anchorage, shown in the lower right, contains more cubic yards of concrete than the Staten Island anchorage (207,000 compared to 171,000) although both anchorages are 130 feet above the ground and 300 feet long.  The views here are from Staten Island, Manhattan and Jersey City, and reflect the grace of this bridge as part of the landscape.
