Dublin's iconic bridge, the Ha'Penny Bridge, opened for traffic in 1816,
spans the Liffey River as a pedestrian bridge. Originally a toll
bridge with its nickname reflecting its eponymous original charge, it was
originally named the Wellington Bridge after the Dublin-born English
general of Waterloo fame, and later officially named the Liffey
Bridge. Made of cast iron in Coalbrookdale, England, it was
renovated between 2001 and 2003. It replaced the ferry that operated
at Bagnio Slip at Fownes Street. It is an elliptical arch bridge
that warrants comparison with New York's own emblematic bridge, the Bow
Bridge of Central Park, featured in the Bridge of the Month archives
on this site.
