The humble Cabbage White butterfly is another example of
a relocated species. Originally from Eurasia, and inadvertently
introduced into Quebec in 1860, it is now found throughout North America,
as well as Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. The males have one
black sex spot on the forward wing, the females, two. These images
are from the Great Swamp and the Delaware and Raritan Canal in New
Jersey. For more information, see UC
Irvine School of Biological Sciences and the BBC
Nature site. |
