For more background, go to Introduction to
bridges.
The
most simple bridge is the beam bridge, a span supported at either
end. The weight is absorbed directly onto the span, causing it to
sag. Consequently, beam bridges are generally of less length, but
are relatively inexpensive to construct. To withstand greater
pressure, the beam would have to be thicker.
