As proclaimed on the plaque to the left, Bordentown was settled in 1682 by Europeans, and saw limited action in the Revolution.  It was home to Thomas Paine, revolutionary firebrand and author of Common Sense, as well as Frances Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  It is situated in Burlington County at the juncture of the Delaware River and Crosswicks Creek.  It is also known as the home of Joseph Bonaparte, brother Napoleon, who was also king of Spain and afterwards, leading socialite in Bordentown life.
