The 710-foot long Albert Bridge crosses the Thames at Chelsea and
Battersea. Authorized by Parliament in 1864, it was not opened until
1873. Originally designed as a cantilever bridge with three spans,
modernization in 1884 made it into more of a suspension bridge. Its
original engineer was Roland Mason Ordish (1824 - 1886), the bridge was
named for Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband.
