August 2005:  Stirling Bridge             Stirling, Scotland

Sources differ, but this four-span stone arch bridge is reported to have been built around 1500, replacing the wooden structure at this site that formed the crux of the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, as reflected on the sign at the site (below, left).  Parts were rebuilt following destruction during the Jacobite Rebellion the 1740s.  The Battle of Stirling Bridge saw the young Scot rebel leader, William Wallace, victorious over a much larger English force.  A year later Wallace was defeated by Edward I at the Battle of Falkirk.
