Sources differ, but this
four-span stone arch bridge is reported to have been built around 1500,
replacing the wooden structure at this site that formed the crux of the
Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, as reflected on the sign at the site
(below, left). Parts were rebuilt following destruction during the
Jacobite Rebellion the 1740s. The Battle of Stirling Bridge saw the
young Scot rebel leader, William Wallace, victorious over a much larger
English force. A year later Wallace was defeated by Edward I at the
Battle of Falkirk.
