The stone, four-arch
Kingston Bridge was built in 1798 to replace a wooden bridge at this
location across the Millstone River, which was destroyed by George
Washington's forces on January 3, 1777 after the Battle of Princeton, so
that British forces under Lord Cornwallis could not follow. The
detail shows the coursed rubble construction. The bottom left square
shows the current girder bridge that now carries Route 27 across the
river. This bridge is featured in The
Bridges of New Jersey, now
available through internet booksellers and in bookstores.
